about

My arrangement for electric guitars and 'metal' band of Peter Warlock's wonderful 'Capriol Suite' written for string orchestra in 1926. The piece used renaissance melodies found in a 16th century dance manual by Thoinot Arbeau called "Orchesographie', which gave instructions on the correct movements for various renaissance dances and the etiquette surrounding courtly behaviour in relation to music and dance.
Warlock's treatment of these melodies is simultaneously traditional and modern, the movements retaining their charming renaissance character whilst more clashing contemporary harmony (particular at the very end of the "Mattachins" movement) indicates this work is not as old as it may at first seem.
